Centre West, East Kilbride

No one driving past East Kilbride town centre could miss it. A vast network of red and grey steel that's risen upwards with surprising speed. Since Miller Construction began work on April 2nd this year, the Centre West Shopping Centre has wasted no time stamping its mark on the landscape.

Due for opening in Spring 2003, it’s already easy to gauge the scale of this 265,000-square-feet retail and leisure development. Once complete, it will make East Kilbride Scotland's largest covered shopping centre with a total floor space of 1.2 million square feet.

Much of the red steel structure belongs to the development’s host store Debenhams. Its steelworks are now complete with the concrete floors being laid. The four-level department store will cover 120,000 square feet. Debenhams will be joined in the centre by a host of national retailers.

The grey steel belongs to the new multi-storey car park. It will be open from mid November, providing up to 420 spaces in the run up to the Christmas shopping rush. Other work completed on site includes the underground service tunnel, major alterations to the existing road network and piling works due to poor ground conditions. Work in progress includes the construction of the shopping centre’s external walls and roofs along with the installation of mechanical and electrical services.

The site, which was once home to the old Centre One Tax Office, is owned by South Lanarkshire Council. The Council is working with British Land, owners of the Plaza, on the development which will give a huge boost to the local economy. New jobs will be created - Debenhams alone will employ over 300 new staff - and there will be the additional benefit of increased spending as visitor numbers to the town rise.
