South Lanarkshire Council's Hamilton Sports Grounds are now officially open after being launched by the recent Festival of Sport.

The event, which was held in May, involved competitors from local schools, sports clubs and clubs within and outwith South Lanarkshire.

Tennis supremos Peter McNamara and Peter Fleming (former Wimbledon doubles champions) were also there to coach local schoolchildren and played a short exhibition match. Scottish Women's football coach, Vera Pauw, was also on hand to give competitors in the girls football competitions a few tips.

The £9m development is part of the Hamilton Ahead Initiative and provides top quality public facilities for a range of sports. These include:

• football - six grade A grass pitches, two grade A seven-a-side pitches, three synthetic five-a-side pitches, two synthetic seven-a-side pitches
• six synthetic tennis courts
• a roller hockey court
• a full size synthetic pitch football/hockey pitch
• a synthetic cricket wicket
• a grass rugby pitch
• a basketball court
• a new bowling pavilion, two greens and two synthetic rinks with facilities for disabled players
• new starter's office at the golf course
• a new changing pavilion (currently under construction)

Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds is open:
Monday to Friday 10am to 10pm
Saturday 10am to 5pm
Sunday 10am to 9pm
