A Taste of the Countryside

Market day looks set to become a regular feature of South Lanarkshire life following a successful trial.

Last year, South Lanarkshire Council helped set up a monthly farmers’ market in Hamilton. Farmers received organisational, marketing and financial support from the council.

That initial support has now come to an end. But the venture has proved such a success that the stall holders have formed themselves into a co-operative company.

In future, the event – now named Hamilton Farm Produce Market – will be run by the Lanarkshire Farmers’ Market Co-operative.

Based on its popularity on previous occasions, it is hoped the market can become an established feature in Lanarkshire with the potential for three each month in South Lanarkshire and one every month in North Lanarkshire.

The markets offer farmers an extra source of income, but also benefit local businesses by increasing footfall into the town centre.

Featured is a wide range of quality Scottish produce including ostrich meat, venison, beef, lamb, pork, vegetables, cheese, home baking and plants.

Customers have the chance to chat to stall holders and ask questions about the produce. All products available are grown, reared, baked, smoked or processed by the stall holders.

Future markets will be held in Hamilton Town Square on October 20th, November 17th and December 15th.
