A 445 acre (180 hectares) country park with visitor centre, children's zoo, riverside walks, children's play areas, gardens and conservatory. The centre links to a grade B listed building - the now privately owned Torrance House - and to Torrance House Golf Course, operated by Sport and Recreation Services. The East Kilbride Sports Club with rugby and tennis facilities also lies within its boundaries. The Visitor Centre houses historical and natural history displays, and a temporary display room that is also used for meetings, a reception area and shop. A cafe run by franchise is located in the same courtyard.
The gardens include formal planting, and parts of the children's zoo that includes birds and domestic pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as more exotic species. The park also houses goats, pigs, sheep and some Highland cattle.
The Conservatory, which opened in 1995, has exotic plants and small animals and is manned by the same animal and horticultural staff who cover the gardens and zoo. The conservatory provides an extensive events programme which is open to local schools and the general public.

Museum of Scottish Country Life

The new Museum of Scottish Country Life shows how country people lived and worked in Scotland in the past, and how this has shaped the countryside of today. The museum was formed from a partnership between the National Trust of Scotland and the National Museums of Scotland. The site includes a new £6 million exhibition building housing the national Country Life collections and the original Georgian farmhouse and working farm at Wester Kittochside with a 60-acre events area.
Situated on a 170-acre site in the green belt between East Kilbride and Glasgow, the farm was traditionally run by 10 generations of the Reid family, who farmed there for 400 years.
The Museum is funded by a variety of partners including; the Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Regional Development Fund, South Lanarkshire Council, Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire, Historic Scotland and LandTrust. |
An important local and regional facility which opened in February 1996 telling the story of William and John Hunter - the famous medical pioneers - within the actual house where they grew up. The museum also houses displays on the development of East Kilbride New Town including a large library of pictures and archive materials from the files of the East Kilbride Development Corporation and other sources.
You can see murals, reconstructed kitchen scene, audio-visual display on East Kilbride and the Hunter brothers, computer programmes on medical matters and an interactive talking touch table. There is also a soft play area for younger children and a small exhibit of items from William Hunter's collections on loan from the Hunterian Museum.
A small local history museum refurbished in 1996 and situated on the edge of Strathaven Park. It has permanent exhibits on the town and four small gallery areas with exhibits on the castle, town, Covenanters, trade and industry, weaving, Strathaven at War, and the ceramics collection.
